tile-small.gifRob Brawner of Poncey Highland is the Walk Score Competition winner. He has a score of  94 -- defined by Walk Score as a  "Walker's Paradise."  He's also in close proximity to the coming BeltLine which will increase his walk factor exponentially as the trail + transit infrastructure is built.

Nanosolar: hope shines on the horizon

"Every minute, enough of the sun's light reaches the earth to meet the world's energy demands for an entire year. What if every house and building in an entire city could collect that energy?"

Nano + printing technology = thin film solar panels. This is solar cell production based on the economics of printing, cutting the cost of solar electricity by an entire order of magnitude. The nanosolar breakthrough means that solar power could soon be as cheap and ubiquitous as grid power.

Georgia Power leads the Change a Light pledge

gpc_banner_cfl_03.jpg
Speaking of change agents — looks like we've got our fair share here in Georgia. I see that Georgia Power Company is the top organization in Energy Star's Change a Light, Change the World Campaign with a total of 145,363 pledges and 173,211 bulbs. That represents an energy savings of $4,542,632 and 70,843,299 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions prevented.

The Energy Star Change a Light Campaign is a national challenge to encourage every American to help change the world, one light — one energy-saving step — at a time.

If you haven't done so already, please take the pledge. You can do so here.

Happy Birthday to the world's greatest change agent

Jesus is undisputably the greatest change agent the world has ever seen. He changed the world without the Internet, TV, talk radio, government, politics, or technology. The baby we focus on this time of year grew into a man who inspired folks from all walks of life to do a 1800 turn and start following him.

We've been discussing Walk Scores and urban walkability the past few days so, in harmony with that topic and the "reason for the season," I offer my ode to the most excellent pedestrian to ever walk the earth [sung to the tune of "Walking in Your Footsteps" by The Police]:

Walkin’ in His Footsteps

About 2000 years ago
You walked upon this planet so
Now you are Lord of all I see
What is it You see in me?
That you’d ask me to come along
Just like Peter, James and John

[Chorus]
And come walkin’ in your footsteps
Walkin’ in your footsteps

Hey there, Mrs. Prejudiced
Why don’t you make a brand new list
Of different people who could be
Growing in your family tree
And treat all colors like you would
If they all lived in your ‘hood

And come walkin’ in His footsteps
Walkin’ in His footsteps

Hey there, Mr. Ambitious
You want the rest to eat your dust
You know that in that Old Rat Race
Rodents always take first place

why not come….
[Chorus]

Hey there, Ms. Material Girl
Why don’t you let go of the World
Those things can’t bring you happiness
Give it all to Him then you’ll be blessed

[Chorus]

Hey there, Mr. Self-Righteous
Humility would be a plus
If we could pull the mask away
Would you go or would you stay?
And join us on that narrow road
Where Jesus lifts your heavy load

[Chorus]

Now we’re here and now it’s time
To search our heart and search our mind
And ask ourselves what He would do
If He was standing in our shoes

And then go….
[Chorus]

Top 50 Real Estate Marketing Bloggers

The guys over at International Listings Blog have named me one of their "Top 50 Real Estate Marketing Bloggers." Their roster includes some folks that I respect and have learned from, like Realty Blogging, so it's a real honor to be included on their list.

International Listings has been focused on worldwide luxury real estate since 2001. That's what real estate is about these days -- focusing on a niche. I'm so glad I chose to focus on green real estate over the last year since 2007 has proven to be a tipping point and the niche is now red hot in an otherwise tepid market. Lifestyles of  Health and Sustainability [LOHAS] have been a passion of mine for years. Blogging on these issues [and occasionally off-topic] has been gratifying for me and allowed me to connect with like-minded buyers and sellers in Atlanta's eco-space. Being recognized for the trouble is a nice bonus.

Thanks to Andy and Brian for the shout-out.

Living Christmas Tree, Part Deux

living%20christmas%20tree%20decorated.jpg

Last Christmas was our first attempt at a living Christmas tree ["I'm Dreaming of a Green Christmas"]. I am sorry to report that the tree didn't survive the replanting. We decided to give it another go, anyway. We learned a couple of things, so maybe this year we'll have success.

First lesson is that you can't keep a live Christmas tree indoors for longer than 7 - 10 days. Longer periods in a home can lead to the death of the tree. We had ours indoors last year for 17 days!

My bad...should've done a little more research.

Second thing is to make sure the species of tree is well-suited to growing in your area. We picked a Frazier Fir last year. I've always loved the beauty of Frazier Firs. It was also the only species that the Christmas tree farm had with a root ball. I remember wondering why we didn't see more of these beautiful evergreens used in local landscaping.

Hello! Clue phone ringing! Frazier Firs are indigenous to the highlands and don't do well in middle Georgia or anywhere below 5,000 foot elevations.

Meanwhile, Randy Flinders, Broadband Writer/Producer for The Weather Channel Interactive, had read my living Christmas tree blog entry from last year and asked if he could do a story if we were going to try again. So this morning he met us over at Fourakre Christmas Tree Farm, a choose-and-cut farm about 5 minutes from our home. This is the place where we got the ill-fated tree of Christmas past. I didn't feel so bad about last year's tree when Adrian Fourakre, the owner, told me that he had lost four of the root balled firs he had planted. He's a tree expert and has been growing evergreens since 1981. He said they didn't have a chance with the drought conditions we had experienced in 2007.

He didn't have any with the root ball available this year, but did have a few that had been planted in a grow bag, making them easy to plop from the ground for replanting. We chose a blue ice, a type of cypress that grows very well in these parts and has an exotic look. It also has the most intense evergreen fragrance of any tree we've ever had. Smells like Christmas all over the loft.

Back at the farm, Randy was filming the tree acquisition and doing interviews. The story should run on The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth next week with broadband video content at www.climate.weather.com by Tuesday or Wednesday. Video is worth a million words, so I'll save the rest of the story for Randy's production. I trust you'll find it informative and a strong contender for a "Best Documentary on Living Christmas Trees" Academy Award should they ever have such a category. Stay tuned for the link.

For now, the tree is temporarily planted in a washtub sitting in our living room. The day after Christmas, we'll plant it in a space outside our bedroom window. We're hoping to enjoy this one for years to come...

EnergyLoan Guy Speaks

Jeff Cole, a.k.a. Energy Loan Guy, has written some strong commentary on green mortgages that will resonate with the LOHASians out there. Jeff doesn't have his own blog yet, so I've posted his observations below without edit and with his permission:
