Time for smaller houses
In the recent "Global Warming Survival Guide" Time magazine suggests "51 Things We Can Do" to make a difference. Of particular interest to me were #2 - Get blueprints for a green house; and #6 - Ditch the McMansion. Both of these suggestions are embodied in the Hobbitattm concept I've been telling you about.
In their appeal for smaller houses, the editors explain that "a relatively inefficient small house consumes less energy than a greener large house and uses fewer building materials, which expand the carbon footprint."
Our Hobbitattm plans call for houses built to a maximum of 1,000 square feet (with a few in the 650 square foot range), and chock-full of green building materials and techniques.
I was thrilled that the Time article high-lighted Jay Shafer and his Tumbleweed Tiny Houses. Their description of his homes as "fit for a hobbit" was validating and illuminates another dimension of our Hobbitattm concept. Although the Cottage Housing Code for our first village site is ground-breaking for metro Atlanta, it doesn't allow for a home as small as 350 square feet. We do plan to offer homes in the 350 square feet range for sale, though. Our sales center will be such a home and will, itself, be for sale as a turn-key home that can be transported, in the Tumbleweed fashion, by flatbed trailer to the purchaser's location of choice.
Current market conditions have buyers and builders thinking smaller according to this article by Kelly Evans of The Wall Street Journal.
