Atlanta gets a Walk Score

I started a Walk Score competition last week to see which of my site visitors lived in the most walkable neighborhoods. Read this journal entry for your chance to win $50.

The city of Atlanta got it's own walk score this week in a report released by the Brookings Institute. The region ranked 14th among the 30 largest American metropolitan areas in a survey of walkable urban places released this Tuesday.

The report high-lighted four hot spots for walkability in Atlanta:

  • Atlantic Station
  • Buckhead
  • Decatur
  • Midtown
One area where Atlanta could score higher is in the link between walkable areas and rail transit. The report noted that Atlanta could do more with special zoning districts around MARTA stops to encourage development. One author reported, "You have a tremendous resource in Atlanta with MARTA," he said. "But you haven't taken enough advantage of development within walking distance of those stations." I heard that with my bad ear. And I'm glad somebody else said it, for a change. That's the central idea behind my other blog, ATL Trail + Rail. I've been blogging there on the intersection of trail, rail, and transit-oriented development [TOD] since 2003. My observations on this subject are frequently met with everything from mild amusement to outright scorn in the land of Auto-Love, so it's nice to hear some outside perspective. I hope we can take the Brooking Institute findings as instructive advice and start to see more walkable development in close proximity to MARTA stations.
